After the Marine Offences Act in August 1967, Radio
London's MV Galaxy set sail for Hamburg where she was dry-docked and refitted.
In 1969, the initial Radio Nordsee project (aimed for the German Bight) was due
to start from the radio ship. However the ambitious plans failed as the German
government introduced a new law forbidding transmissions from international
waters. In 1970, the vessel moved to Kiel. On April 20th 1979, the MV Galaxy
finally sank.
During her twelve years in German harbours, the Galaxy was
visited by several free radio enthusiasts who "found" countless ducuments. An
interesting collection of memos and letters was generously secured by Werner
Hartwig from Emden. After more than 3 decades, the papers have now come up after
a dive.
