Jenny Baynton in drydock

Theo Bakker reporting: Thursday morning 14th May 2009 I got in the car after a message from Mandy Marton from Radio Seagull that the Jenni Baynton, the radioship from Radio Waddenzee and Radio Seagull, would be docked. In the meantime it had been towed from it’s mooring in the Willems Harbour in Harlingen to a wharf outside the city. On the way to Harlingen I passed the transmitters on land from which is broadcast temporarily.
Because I could hardly see the ship from the road around the harbour I decided to drive to the wharf itself. When I called the reception from outside the gates a nice lady allowed me to come in and make photo’s of the Jenni Baynton. I got a pass for a day and could stay as long as I liked!
In the meantime the ship was tightly anchored on the workingplace. Several people were busy with the ship that already had been stripped of the shells which in the course of many years had stuck themselves to the hull of the ship which had got the skin of a whale.
The men, who were wearing gasmasks, were busy spraying primer on the part beneath the waterline. They asked me to stay away from it as it was dangerous.
The ship itself is a solid roundshaped ship that has been built as a lightship. The lighthouse is still there very prominently and was a beacon at sea. Now the electronic signalling has taken over from the lighthouses and lightships they are not needed anymore and the Jenni Baynton is one of the very few that escaped scrapping. And that is very nice.
On the bottom of the ship is a kind of ring that should prevent the ship from swaying and gives it more stability. Also on the Waddensea it can be very dangerous seen the large number of shipwrecks on the bottom of the sea. So it may be very useful!
It is a very impressive ship that looks much smaller above the waterline than it is in reality. The iceberg! If you have to be on a ship for months it is very nice of course that you have space for victuals and to live in.
At this moment the ship will probably be back in the Willems Harbour from where it will leave for the island of Griend in the Waddenzee at the beginning of next week. On that small island was in the Middle Ages a small city with a monastry. From this location Radio Waddenzee and Radio Seagull will broadcast live from May 20th until June 6th next.
Then, how nostalgic, there will be a real working radioship before the Dutch coast!

Theo Bakker schrijft: Donderdagochtend 14 mei 2009 ben ik in de auto gestapt na een bericht van Mandy Marton van Radio Seagull dat de Jenni Baynton, het zendschip van Radio Waddenzee en Radio Seagull in dok zou gaan. Inmiddels was het van zijn vaste ankerplaats in de Willemshaven in Harlingen versleept naar een buitengaatse werf een eind verderop. Onderweg kwam ik langs de zendinstallatie op land vanwaar tijdelijk wordt uitgezonden.
Omdat het schip vanaf de weg die om de haven heen loopt nauwelijks te zien was, besloot ik naar de werf zelf te rijden. Toen ik mij meldde bij de praatpaal bij de ingang werd ik te woord gestaan door een aardige receptioniste die mij toestemming gaf om de Jenni Baynton te fotograferen. Ik kreeg een dagpas en kon zolang blijven als ik wilde.
Het schip stond inmiddels stevig verankerd op de werkvloer. Diverse mensen waren bezig met het schip dat inmiddels ontdaan was van de schelpen die zich in de loop der jaren hadden vastgezet op de huid van het schip dat was gaan lijken op een bultrug.
Met gasmaskers op waren ze bezig een grondlaag te spuiten op het deel beneden de waterlijn. Gezien het gevaar leek het hen beter dat ik op een afstandje bleef.
Het schip zelf is een stevig rondbuikig schip dat als lichtschip is gebouwd. De lichttoren staat er nog steeds heel prominent op en was een baken in zee. Nu de electronica het heeft overgenomen van de vuurtorens en lichtschepen zijn ze niet meer nodig en de Jenni Baynton is een van de weinige die aan de slopershamer is ontsnapt. En maar gelukkig ook!
Onderaan het schip zit rondom een soort vin die het schip moet behoeden tegen al teveel schommelingen en het meer stabiliteit geeft. Ook de Waddenzee kan zeer tekeer gaan gezien het grote aantal wrakken dat er op de bodem ligt.
Het is een imposant schip dat boven de waterlijn veel kleiner lijkt dat het in werkelijkheid is. Het ijsbergidee. Als je maandenlang op een schip moet zitten is het natuurlijk fijn als je veel proviand kunt opslaan en wat leefruimte hebt.
Inmiddels zal het schip weer in de Willemshaven afgemeerd liggen vanwaar het in het begin van volgende week zal vertrekken naar het eiland Griend (waar ooit een middeleeuwse stad met klooster was). Vanaf deze locatie zullen Radio Waddenzee en Radio Seagull live uitzendingen verzorgen van 20 mei tot en met 6 juni aanstaande.
Dan ligt er weer, heel nostalgisch, een echt zendschip voor de kust!
